Books on Slow Living and Mindfulness: My 10 favorite

Taking time out for yourself and cultivating mindfulness, slow living, and wellness is more important than ever. Luckily, books are some of our best allies on this journey. They inspire, inform, and remind us that a more intentional, peaceful life is within reach. I’ve read quite a few titles that have truly made a difference in my understanding and practice of these principles, so I wanted to share my favorites with you. If you are looking to deepen your current lifestyle, these books will give you plenty to think about and apply.

Here’s my list of Books on Slow Living and Mindfulness in no particular order.

As read each of them on different stages of my life, my personal rating might be out dated 🙂

1. Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn (Personal rate 5).
If mindfulness sounds intimidating or complicated, this book will change your mind. Jon Kabat-Zinn offers straightforward advice for bringing mindfulness into everyday activities in this thought provoking book. From breathing exercises to cultivating awareness during simple routines, his guidance makes mindfulness feel accessible and doable. It’s like having a kind, wise friend reminding you to stay present. “You can only get there, if you are fully there”
2. The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh (Personal rate 4).
Thich Nhat Hanh, a wise Buddhist monk, shares simple yet profound techniques for cultivating mindfulness. His gentle wisdom emphasizes that mindfulness isn’t about blanking your mind but about being fully present and engaged. Whether it’s washing dishes, walking, or sitting quietly, his teachings help create a sense of peace in everyday life. It has a lot about the Buddhist philosophy in such a simple way that what I used to find unattainable was all of a sudden the only way, but don’t be scared, its not a religious book.
3. Make Time by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky (Personal rate 3.9).
This book is a game-changer for anyone feeling overwhelmed by endless to-do lists and digital distractions. Knapp and Zeratsky offer practical, actionable strategies for reclaiming your time and focusing on what truly matters. Their approach revolves around creating intentional “highlight” moments each day, minimizing distractions, and designing your day around what energizes you. It’s a refreshing reminder that a mindful, slowed-down life starts with small, deliberate choices about how you spend your time. Perfect for those looking to cut through the noise and make space for meaningful moments without compromising productivity.
4. The Joy of Less by Francine Jay (Personal rate 3.2).
Minimalism isn’t just about decluttering your home; it’s about decluttering your mind. Francine Jay shows how simplifying our physical space can bring clarity and calm. Her step-by-step approach makes decluttering feel manageable and even enjoyable, I still need to work a lot on it, so always a good reminder. Plus, a tidy space really does lead to a clearer mind and more peace. But it could be shorter.
5. The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu (Personal rate 3.8)
This isn’t just a feel-good read. It’s a heartfelt conversation about what really makes us happy. Both spiritual leaders share stories and wisdom on overcoming suffering, practicing compassion, and appreciating the small joys in life. It’s a powerful reminder that happiness isn’t something outside us but something we cultivate from within. With a nice quote that helps warm the heart if you leave abroad “Wherever you have friends, that’s your country, and wherever you receive love, that’s your home.”. The rating could be higher if you focuses more on the quotes, but the narrator did annoy me at parts (sorry)
6. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (Personal rate 3.4).
A beautifully written book blending indigenous wisdom with science, Kimmerer’s stories about our relationship with nature are inspiring. This book invites us to see ourselves as part of a larger ecosystem, reciprocal instead of exploitative. It’s a gentle call to live more sustainably and gratefully, aligning perfectly with slow living and wellness practices. but maybe its the most unique on this list of Books on Slow Living and Mindfulness: My 10 favorite
7. Mind full to Mindful by Om Swami (Personal rate 4.8).
This book offers a clear, approachable guide to shifting from a scattered, busy mind to a calm, focused state. Swami’s practical exercises and stories make the idea of mindfulness feel doable. It’s great for anyone wanting to move beyond theory and actually experience mental clarity. And while you are at it, maybe pick up his other works. “Your thoughts are just your thoughts.”

Bonus: Some of his other notable books include:

  • “The Hidden Wisdom of Yoga” – Explores the deeper philosophical aspects of yoga and how they can be integrated into daily life. It’s a good complement for those interested in the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of yoga, aligning with the themes of mindfulness and intentional living.
  • “The Wellness Sense” – Offers insights into holistic health practices, emphasizing natural approaches to wellness and mindful self-care. This aligns with the holistic wellness theme and encourages gentle, self-compassionate practices.
  • “A Little Book of Secrets” – Shares simple yet profound spiritual insights, encouraging a more mindful attitude toward life and everyday challenges.
8. The Nature Fix by Florence Williams (Personal rate 3).
This book highlights how spending time outdoors boosts our happiness, health, and creativity. Williams explores scientific studies and personal stories about the healing power of nature. It’s a compelling argument to spend more time in parks, woods, or mountains, and to embrace outdoor adventures as an essential part of wellness.
9. Essentialism by Greg McKeown (Personal rate 3.8).
Essentialism is all about focusing on what truly matters and letting go of everything that doesn’t serve your purpose or happiness. McKeown’s practical advice helps you prioritize your energy and time, leading to a more meaningful and balanced lifestyle. It’s a perfect read for anyone feeling overwhelmed and in need of some clarity.
10. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle (Personal rate 4)
This classic is a game-changer when it comes to mindfulness. Tolle teaches that the key to peace and happiness lies in living in the present moment. His insights help us recognize how much of our suffering comes from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Living fully in the now transforms how we experience life, bringing clarity, calm, and joy.
