A 4-Day Journey Through Azerbaijan, a nation known for its rich history and stunning landscapes, offers travelers an enticing blend of culture, nature, and adventure. Our journey took us on an unforgettable four-day exploration, balancing the vibrant energy of Baku and the serene beauty of Shahdag. From the architectural marvels of the capital city to the snow-capped mountains of the Caucasus, every moment was a discovery.
Getting to Azerbaijan from Dubai is a breeze, with a flight time of only three hours. We flew with Flydubai, an Emirates budget airline, and enjoyed a smooth journey. For UAE residents, entry process is simple, with a EID valid for six months, you don’t need a visa. For everyone else, they have an simple e-visa process, with an rush fee option.
We rented a car for the entire trip, as we wanted to explore the mountains and didn’t want to waste extra time with public transport. But quickly realized that navigating Baku’s traffic was a uniquely challenging experience, perhaps among the most daunting we’ve encountered, and the parking situation was not easy.
If you are renting a car, you will need a local sim card to pay for the parking, for us used getting e-sims for our travels, it was a not so nice surprise. You have to ways of doing it, by sending an SMS to the number you can find on the street sign or with the app (AZparking), and yes, both ways require the local sim card. We found it easier to use the app and you can add money to the app by credit card or using one of the machines that accepts only cash around the city (they are everywhere).

Days 1-2: Discovering the Charm of Baku
Our 4-day journey through Azerbaijan began in Baku, the cosmopolitan capital of the country. The city seamlessly blends the old with the new, offering a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and modern marvels. Despite the bustling roads, the city’s charm was undeniable. The cleanness and the many parks around the whole city was a very pleasant surprise.
Exploring the Old City (Icherisheher):
Our first destination was the historic heart of Baku—the Old City or Icherisheher. This UNESCO World Heritage site is filled with narrow alleyways, ancient stone buildings, and vibrant markets. We wandered through the cobblestoned streets, absorbing the atmosphere and imagining the stories of centuries past. The beauty of the fortified walls, the design of the Maiden Tower, and the traditional carpet shops captivated us. And if you have the chance, get a bag of strawberries from the many street vendor, they were delicious.
The Palace of the Shirvanshahs:
Within the Old City, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs stood as a testament to Azerbaijan’s rich history. This 15th-century palace complex, with its royal chambers and mausoleums, exuded grandeur. We marveled at the serenity within the palace grounds, which provided insight into the lives of the Shirvan rulers.

Highland Park and the Promenade:
For an unrivaled view of Baku, we journeyed to Highland Park. The panoramic vista of the city skyline, with the Caspian Sea as its backdrop, was breathtaking. The park provided a tranquil escape from the city’s energy, allowing us to reflect on our travels while admiring iconic landmarks like the Flame Towers glowing in the distance.
Descending from the park, we strolled along the Baku Boulevard. This promenade, stretching along the waterfront, offered a leisurely walk amid lush gardens and modern architecture. We enjoyed the sea breeze as we walked past families, street performers, and cafes lining the boulevard.
Heydar Aliyev Center:
One of the highlights of our visit to Baku was the Heydar Aliyev Center. Designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the building is a masterpiece of contemporary design. Its fluid, wave-like structure defies conventional architecture, creating a stunning visual experience. Inside, the center houses exhibitions celebrating Azerbaijan’s culture and achievements. We spent hours exploring the interactive displays and learning about the nation’s innovations and cultural heritage.
Heydar Aliyev Mosque:
A visit to Baku wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Heydar Aliyev Mosque. This modern mosque, with its four minarets and elegant facade, is an impressive addition to Baku’s architectural landscape. We admired the mosque’s grandeur from outside.

Culinary Delights:
Baku is a food lover’s dream, and our dining experiences were nothing short of extraordinary. We indulged in a delightful feast at Firuze Restaurant, where traditional Azerbaijani dishes were paired with warm hospitality. What’s more, we sampled the unique pomegranate wine—both sweet and dry varieties. The wine’s rich flavor, reflective of the region’s fertile lands, made for an exquisite pairing with our meals.
Days 3-4: Retreating to the Serenity of Shahdag
After experiencing Baku’s dynamic energy, we set off on a scenic drive to Shahdag for the second half of our 4-day journey through Azerbaijan. The route took us through stunning landscapes as we left the urban sprawl behind and embraced the tranquility of the mountains. The journey itself was a highlight, transitioning from bustling city views to picturesque countryside panoramas.
Staying at Shahdag Hotel and SPA:
Upon arrival, we checked into the Shahdag Hotel and SPA. The resort was an oasis of relaxation, offering the perfect escape from the early summer heat of Dubai. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the hotel provided a luxurious base for our mountain adventure. The hospitality, elegant decor, and serene ambiance were just what we needed to unwind and rejuvenate.
Reveling in Winter Scenery:
Although it was late in the season, Shahdag surprised us with its breathtaking snowy landscapes. Locals remarked that snow typically doesn’t linger this late into April, making our experience truly special. The resort seemed like a winter wonderland, despite what would normally be the onset of spring.
Though skiing had just ended a few days prior to our arrival, the beauty of the snow-capped mountains was mesmerizing. We enjoyed a taste of the après-ski atmosphere, with food trucks offering delicious local treats and chair lifts still operational, providing scenic rides through the winter landscape. It was a refreshing escape from the early summer heat in Dubai, allowing us to bask in the crisp mountain air.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation:
The Shahdag Hotel and SPA offered the perfect remedy for relaxation after our days of exploration in Baku. The resort’s luxurious amenities included an indoor swimming pool with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, a sauna, and a traditional hammam, where we indulged in soothing therapies. The spa treatments rejuvenated our senses, offering a blend of traditional techniques and modern practices.
The hotel’s breakfast spread was nothing short of spectacular. With a range of options to suit every palate, from fresh pastries and traditional Azerbaijani dishes to a variety of freshly pressed juices, we savored each morning meal at leisure while gazing out at the snow-covered scenery.
Enjoying the Mountain Views:
While Shahdag was a hub for snow activities earlier in the season, in April, it offered tranquility and natural beauty, allowing us to slow down and enjoy our surroundings fully. The mountains were serene, with the last remnants of snow glistening under the sun, creating picturesque vistas that mirrored those found in fairytale books.
Hiking and Nature:
On our drive back to Baku, we decided to indulge in one last adventure by stopping to visit the stunning Candy Cane Mountains. Named for their colorful, striated appearance resembling candy canes, these mountains offered a unique backdrop for a short hike. The vibrant rock formations and natural beauty left us in awe, each stripe telling its own geological story.
The hike was invigorating and provided an opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes of Azerbaijan, from urban architecture in Baku to the splendid nature of Shahdag. It was the perfect way to bid farewell to this enchanting country, leaving us with cherished memories.

Reflecting on our 4-day journey through Azerbaijan, we were captivated by the richness and diversity of this beautiful country. Baku’s blend of historical charm and modern architectural innovation perfectly contrasted with Shahdag’s pristine natural landscapes and tranquil retreats. Each part of the trip provided its own unique experiences, from the cultural insights of the city to the serene escapism of the mountains.
